Healing with Dermal Film
Dermal films (often called “second skin” or by brand names like Saniderm or Tegaderm) are a fantastic way to protect your tattoo during the initial healing stage. These bandages can stay on your tattoo for up to 4 days (or at least 24 hours). Since they provide extended protection, it’s completely normal to see some buildup of ink and fluids beneath the film.
However, if the fluid starts to leak out or the seal is broken, it’s important to remove the bandage and replace it with a new one if possible (your artist may have given you a spare). Any break in the seal can introduce bacteria to your fresh tattoo, so it’s better to be safe.
When it’s time to remove the bandage (usually after a few days), doing it in the shower is highly recommended. Warm water will help loosen the adhesive while also rinsing away any residue from the healing process. Start by carefully lifting the edges of the film, then pull it down close to your skin, much like removing a Command Strip. Once the bandage is off, wash your tattoo with warm water and a gentle soap, then pat it dry with a clean towel.
Healing with Absorbent Medical Bandages
If your skin is sensitive to adhesive materials, a more traditional bandage option might be better for you. Use an absorbent pad secured with sports tape. Keep the bandage on for 3 to 12 hours, depending on your comfort level, and then clean the tattoo with warm water and soap. Follow the same aftercare instructions for the next two weeks to ensure proper healing.
Post-Bandage Care
• As your tattoo heals and begins to dry, apply an unscented, natural moisturizer as needed. While most essential oils in natural products are safe, it’s best to opt for something with minimal ingredients.
• Your tattoo will likely itch as it heals, but it’s crucial to resist scratching or picking at it. This can lead to uneven healing, pigment loss, or even infection.
• For 2–3 weeks, avoid soaking your tattoo in water for extended periods. This includes baths, swimming pools, oceans, rivers, hot tubs, saunas, and similar environments.
• Try to avoid intense exercise or activities that cause heavy sweating during the first few days after getting your tattoo. The gym can wait — consider this your time to rest and recover!
• Once your tattoo is healed, protect it from sunlight by applying sunscreen for at least six months. Keeping your tattoo protected will help maintain its crisp lines and vibrant look.
